Happy Valentine's Day to you and your furkids!
This time of year is all about celebrating love and what better way to celebrate than by talking about the special bond we share with our dogs?
Have you ever experienced having a heart dog/soul dog? You know, that one dog that comes into your life and you instantly make a connection and bond like no other? That deep, unwavering love that just clicks? That's the kind of love we're celebrating today.
My senior dog Simba is my soul dog. He will be 13 in March. He’s my first dog as an adult. He’s been with me through everything & really showed me what unconditional love is.
When we saw each other for the first time, I just knew that he was going to be my best friend. We clicked instantly. It was like we were meant to find each other.
I’m Simba’s person. We have a bond that can’t be broken, and we just get each other. Our bond is really special, and everyone can see just how special it is. People often comment on how connected we are.
This bond is unique. It’s unlike any other bond I’ve had with another dog. The words that I’m sharing with you right now truly don’t even begin to explain the connection we share. It’s deep.
I don’t know if I’ll ever experience this kind of connection with a dog again. It’s like a once-in-a-lifetime type of bond. He can never, ever be replaced. He's my heart dog, through and through.
My puppy, that’s my girl and I think we have a really good connection as well, but I don’t know if it will ever be like the bond I share with Simba. Do you think we get more than one soul dog?
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but your dog loves you more than you know.
A dog’s love is unconditional at all times. No matter what, your dog is going to love you more today than yesterday. Your dog is happy to see you walk through that door every single time like it was the first time you came back home.
You mean EVERYTHING to your dog & don’t you forget it!
This Valentine's Day, let's celebrate the incredible love our dogs give us, especially those once-in-a-lifetime soul dogs. Share your stories of your heart dogs in the comments below! We'd love to hear about the special connections you share.

Hi Kia, I really feel the love in this post, and I completely relate. I met my first 'soul dog' sixteen years ago. He was a black Labrador called Mac, and I honestly felt I could never love another dog like that - our bond was so special.
I'm happy to tell you, that we DO get the opportunity to have more than one soul dog in this lifetime! A week after losing Mac (at fourteen years old) we brought a new puppy into our world. I didn't have any expectations for him to 'replace' Mac in any way. But I can tell you that he has well and truly filled the cavernous space left by my special boy. He is 100% my soul dog, (his name is Maverick) but in his own unique way. He is equally special. Even possibly a little bit more so, because he had such big shoes to fill - he had to be EXTRA special.
So I hope this is reassuring for you. I know that as Mac got older, my husband and I dreaded the day he was no longer around, unable to imagine life without him. We still sense him, and get little signs from him too. The ultimate soul dog.
PS. Simba is gorgeous 😍
I love everything about this post. Sammy was my first dog as an adult. He was an itty bitty sheltie, likely bred at a puppy mill to be a "teacup sheltie." I was home number four for him. The people I adopted him from said they chose me because they didn't want him bounced around anymore and they thought I was the person most likely to keep him forever. That was in 2012. I lost him in 2021 and it still makes me cry. He was my boy through and through. I didn't even have to tell him what I wanted him to do - I'd just snap a finger and he'd know what I meant. Don't get me wrong, he was a hard dog. He had severe anxiety, really bad allergies, a health crisis every year (thanks, puppy mill breeding practices!), and a bark that felt like an ice pick in my brain. Many people told me he was a dog only his mother could love, lol. But man, did I love that little guy. I hope I get more than one soul dog, but if I only get one, I'm still grateful.
